The New York Times Arts pagenotes the amazing work done by Todd Robbins and other performersin its article “Old Time Vaudeville Looks Young Again.“
Vaudeville is on its way back — at least as a fringe element — to Broadway. The Times discusses the appeal of the Vaudeville and Burlesque and notes Magic?s role in the original Vaudeville as well as the modern day redux.
I think the Times misses the point slightly, though. Unlike the other acts that are now being resurrected ? sword swallowing, fan dancing and flea circuses ? magic never went away. The best thing about our art is that it is entertaining as part of a variety show or a full evening performance.
It is nice to see Todd Robbins quoted in the story. “When you do something real that people think is impossible, they can’t deny what they’re seeing,” Mr. Robbins said. “They start to wonder how these things are possible and that means they’re thinking.”
The article refers readers to Mr. Robbins? “Sideshow Saturday Night” at the SoHo Playhouse. Mr. Robbins also works with the folks that bring us ?Monday Night Magic.?
