I am Sorry. Bad Links and Mysteries – Who is Melanie Kerr

On the other hand, I didn’t include MK Magic, the Magic of Melanie Kerr. I checked out her link because it is advertised in every month’s issue of Magic. I know from pricing the space in Magic, that this is not a cheap way to go.

Melanie Kerr – Attractive Link

She has a quarter page each month – down from a full, then a half page – and yet when you go to the page, you can’t order a dang thing and you can’t even join her club. The site is dead for all intents and purposes but there must be more to the story. It can’t be money laundering – she won’t accept the payment.

Viking Mfg’s George Robinson, Jr. Urges Boycott of Knock-Offs

Viking’s Brass Nested Boxes

Thank you for your support. Here is what I have sent to some dealers and friends:It is again a sad day as another Viking item is ripped off by an unscrupulous and parasite company. You all know who this company is.They have now ripped off our proprietary item, The Vanishing LifeSaver as well as our Brass Nest of Boxes. The Vanishing LifeSaver was invented by Edgar Ralston and the manufacturing rights sold to A&B Magic (The Great Alexander). Joe Stevens brought this item to my attention many years ago. I chased it down and I purchased the manufacturing rights from Alexander in 1987 and have been producing this item ever since. I have since been granted the manufacturing rights to all of A&B items though Kenna Thompson who purchased the line upon the death of Alexander. The loathsome company in question has entered the Magic market with an entire line of stolen items. Nothing in their line is original. They have not only stolen from me but from others and it is time that we all took a stand.Viking has been supporting the Magic community with newand original Magic for 30 years and will continue long after this thief is gone and forgotten. He adds nothing to the Magic community but only takes. I ask that you not support this activity and that you support original thought which is how you can guarantee a fresh line of Magic, new and original. If you are offered this or any brass items that you feel are suspect, please call us for verification. All our items are stamped with our Viking logo and have a register number on the instructions. We need to bring some morality and friendship back into the Magic community. We all need to help each other as we will all at some time fall victim to this prey. I ask the Magic dealers to take a stand and I ask the Magic Magazines to deny advertising space to these thieves.Competition is fine when you have protection under the law, but the creative force behind Magic has no legal support at the moment, only the support of moral right. I ask as your friend for over 30 years, someone who has been here for YOUR benefit, trying to give you 100% to give back just a little and help us win against this scourge. I thank you all in advance for your support and consideration and I look forward to bringing you new and exciting magical creations. I have always been here for you and I hope you will now be here for me and others like me. This is not just for me but for the others that havealso been ripped off by this company; John Cornelius, Kennedy, Steve Dusheck, Jr., Al Cohen, Miller and so many more. Thank you again.Sincerely,George R.

So Close and Yet So Far

Rick and Suzan Wilcox

I have not been to the Dells since I was very little. All I could recall of the area was the Tommy Bartlett Water Show. It is still here but they now call it the Tommy Bartlett Thrill Show. But the area has changed so much since.

It is now the water park capital of the world. There were some pretty big water parks on the way up from the Illinois line but they pale in comparison to the size and quality of the indoor parks I?ve seen here. Our hotel has a tremendous park with thousands of gallons of water to take pasty Illinois and Michigan people on a stomach-turning trip.

Like I said, that?s what the family was anticipating. I wanted to see The Rick Wilcox Theater. I read about the theater and the big gamble Rick and Suzan Wilcox undertook in buying the old theater and turning it into a premier venue for their magic show. I knew that I wouldn?t have a chance to see them perform on this trip ? during the winter they perform only on Saturdays.

This is not to say that I haven?t had a chance to see parts of the show. I?ve watched their promotional video like a zombie ? assuming a zombie would stay in a real nice hotel with a water park. The showlooks great; really great.

Dewayne’s Interview

Dewayne at a Comedy Club

How did you get interested in magic?

I saw a substitute teacher perform a trick where he put the kings in the deck, shuffled them, and cut to them one at a time. And yes, that was one of the first things I set out to learn.

Do you remember the feeling when you first saw a trick that amazed you?

When I saw that trick (above) I just remember thinking “there’s no way possible” and feeling like I need to explain the realm of possibilities.

Is that the feeling you try to duplicate for others now that you’re performing?

The first thing I want is to cause the average person to forget. I want them to forget and escape everything that may be bothering them, and I think magic does that.

Second, I want to open their minds to other things that could be possible. Keep hope/faith in other words. If a person thinks its not possible and they believe that, that can be sad. There are people walking that were told by doctors, they couldn’t, and they are now– thats magic. someone believed in it and it came true.

Dewayne Works a Picnic

You perform in many types of venues including corporate meetings, comedy clubs, baseball stadiums and schools. How do you modify your act to meet the needs of these venues?

The first thing is for me to understand the crowd. I ask “what type of crowd will be there” that answer tells me what show (of the 3) to do. Then I find out how they want things, i.e. close-up or stand-up. There are times when they say close-up and I tell them its best to do stand-up because of the layout of the venue, or vice versa. But I have my shows with me at every performance, so I could be ready to change game plans at the last minute. Sometimes, I’m not really modifying tricks, its more what comedy to do and what to leave out.

What type of magic do you perform in your stage act?

90% of my stage show are things I have made up or modified to fit my style/jokes I need. A magician may see something in my show start off the regular way, but at the end it will be different.

Do you — thinking of Robert Houdin’s statement that “a magician is an actor playing the role of a magician” — see yourself as a comedian doing magic or a magician who is funny?

I see myself as a magician who is very funny. When I decided to start to do that, I wanted my show to be able to have funny moments at jokes, with amazing magic. not corny one-liners that get chuckles. Or a comic doing silly magic shop gags. Dealing with comedy clubs and billing yourself out as a…

Dewayne Hill: A Good Guy In The Magic World

Dewayne Hill Teaches Magic

Dewayne Hill fell in love in high school — not a novel event. Lots of people fall in love and out of love and then back into love but Dewayne’s love has stayed with him. A substitute teacher at South Charleston, West Virginia took the time to teach Dewayne some card tricks and the directed him towards a few choice magic books. Within months, Dewayne was practicing card tricks for four hours a day and ready for his first big show. He hasn’t looked back since. His shows are clean. He can do the same act in church, minor league ball parks and comedy clubs. There’s not many out there that can say that. Dewayne told a West Virginia newspaper why he loves magic. “I would have to say I am drawn in by the craftsmanship,” Hill said by phone while driving this past Friday between two gigs. “Just that a person with a regular deck of cards can entertain a group for hours — that fact alone is amazing. You say no way, but there it is.”He spends his spare time giving back what he received. He teaches school kids about magic and helps them learn tricks. Great story, great guy, great art. It is nice to see someone with talent and class do so well. Check out the article about Dewayne Hill in the Herald-Dispatch.We’ll put up his webpage on the Links of Fame.
