Henry Evans – Our Magician of the Year

Henry Evans – Magician of the Year

I watched miracle after miracle performed for me as the sole attendee at his dealer’s booth. After doing the Ten Exact Cuts, he told me he had to stop because he was scheduled to lecture in a little bit. I had no clue. Now I do.

I encourage you to visit Henry Evans’ Website ? it is in both Spanish and English ? and sets forth the beginning of what promises to be a very nice site.

It is currently under construction but there is enough there to see the background and rapid rise to international stardom he has accomplished and well-deserved.

I was impressed by two part of the site in particular: the photos and the accomplishments list.

His accomplishments include:

World Champion in Card Magic – FISM 2000 – Lisbon, Portugal.
First Prize in Card Magic – FLASOMA 1992 – Bogota, Colombia.
Third Prize in Card Magic – FISM 1994 – Yokohama, Japan.
Magician of the year 1995 and 2000 – Entidad Magica Argentina.
MVP prize at 2002 4F Convention, Buffalo, USA.
Magic Castle Nominee for Best Lecture 2001.
Last performances and lectures.
AFAP Convention – Vannes, France.
Spain?s National Convention – Granada, Espa?a.
Italy?s National Convention – Abano Terme, Italy.
Hoerbi?s Convention – Zurich, Switzerland.
Harvest of Magic – Atlanta, USA.
Magic Castle – Los Angeles, USA.
IBM Convention – Orlando, USA.
Magic Seminar – Las Vegas, USA.
El Duco Convention – Lund, Sweden
Terca Magica – Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Dino?s Convention – Mexico DF, Mexico.
Gran Jaguar Convention – Guatemala, Guatemala.
Bazar de Magia Convention – Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Lecture tours in Spain, France, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, and Austria.

But his photos, for me, are even more impressive. Not simply because he is seated beside David Copperfield or Ren? Lavand, but because he looks so excited to be present in the pictures.

He appears to be on the top of the world in the photo where he is pointing to the Magic Castle schedule of performers.
Henry is not just a great inventor, performer and lecturer but is someone who truly cares and loves this art.

We are not worthy but we sure are lucky. He is our Magician of the Year!

Abbott’s Close-Up Convention

Abbott’s – The Center of the Magic World

The Abbott?s Spring Close-Up Convention was a great event. It was my first but it won?t be my last.

The Midwest has been in the midst of one heck of a winter. We?ve had ice-storms, snow, more snow and bitter cold, followed by more snow. As if by magic, Winter ended on Friday, and Spring kicked in. The sun came out (except at night) and the temperatures rose to the 50?s. I watched animals thaw as I walked towards the Abbott?s Magic Company.

The magic inside Abbott?s was almost as remarkable. I hesitated in purchasing my tickets and was only able to get the standing room spots along side the bleacher that makes up the center of the Abbott?s showroom. The event was, according to Abbott?s, the best attended ever.

Doc Eason was first up.

I?ve never seen Doc perform but certainly his reputation precedes him. Doc has been at the same bar for more than 25 years and while I have family members that exceed that record, he was actually working behind the bar as a magician. (I do have an uncle who fell over a bar and thus was behind it for a while until the paramedics came).

On the Road to Colon

“Now, You’re Sure I Cannot Escape?”

At times, I exceeded 100 mph as I moved along the roads to the Magic Capital of the World. As I turned south towards the Indiana boarder along US 69, I slowed it up a little. I dropped it down to 91 mph because the roads were bumpy and for some reason I thought I should.

I soon saw why. A Michigan State Trooper saw my excessive and unsafe speed and followed me for about a quarter mile before pulling me over.

?You know that I pulled you over because you were speeding?? he asked.

?Yes, sir, I saw your car and tried to hit the brakes but I guess not enough to slow down.?

?Well, you were going 91 in a 70 mph zone. Where we heading so quickly.?

?I?m going to the Close-Up Magic Convention at Abbott?s in Colon.?

?Is that this weekend?? he asked. He seemed genuinely interested. ?Are you a magician??

I handed my driver?s license, insurance card and registration as I told him I was.

An Honest Critique of Brian Gillis and Sue

Sue Divines Serial Numbers of Remote Bills

One of my favorite magicians is Brian Gillis. I saw him for the first time at the Magic Castle years ago. He did an outstanding effect where several members of the audience looked at any card in a deck and he was able to tell each member the card they glanced at. It seemed impossible to me.

I introduced myself after his performance and he was kind and nodded as I told him how much I enjoyed his act. I know that he must have heard the same from so many people that night and every night during his run at the Castle.

I returned to the Magic Castle and heard he would be performing in the Palace of Mystery with “Sue.” I knew that if Brian Gillis was involved in the act it had to be great and so I actually conned the door person to allow me to see the show twice that night.

Bottom line: if you ever have a chance to see Brian Gillis and Sue, you need to grab that chance quickly. If you love magic and the history of magic, you will love this show. Brian and Sue put on two classics from the rich history of our art. Brian and Sue do a fantastic mentalism act.

I’m Geeked!

The New Version of Stratospheres

You don’t care, but I do. My mom and dad we’re divorced when I was 12. I was (and am) the oldest of the group. As a present for the hard work I expended in keeping my siblings from walking into the street or drinking Drano, I was allowed to pick out any trick I wanted from the magic shop downtown.

I picked out Expert at the Card Table by S.W. Erdnase. I practiced the Mexican Turn-Over for hours on my bed. I eventually got the skill to do it even without doing a monte trick. I still use it when I screw up a prediction and need to do a top switch. I also learned — I think, the wrong way — to deal seconds. It was fine without an audience watching, but once I did it in public, I left the Mechanic’s Grip and moved to a modified Vernon version.

But then I received the Stratospheres. My pop’s friend told me that he received this from Jimmy King when he visited MAK Magic back in the 1970′s. It was beautiful and it was a stage effect. I finally had a stage effect. I later got the candle through arm — also by U.F. Grant and sold by Jimmy King — but this was my first.

It is such a great trick and can actually be done close up. I used to use the same outer tube as the one I would use for the Crystal Silk Cylinder. It made the cylinder seem magic rather than any other part of the trick.

If you have this effect or you have seen it, you know the kicker is when the yellow and green balls are put into the clear cylinder and the red is put into the box. With a flash, the box is broken open to be shown empty and the red is between the yellow and green.

I love my old set and I’ll put it in my magic case near my two trophies and ribbons. But I need a new one. As far as I can tell, the price for which it is being offered is about 1/3rd the price (in real dollars) of the one I received that was purchased in the early seventies.

I get nothing for this recommendation. Tim does, but I don’t. I recommend you buy it. You’ll love it. Buy it from Penguin Magic by clicking on the name and Tim will be rich!

Kathleen.

Buy this trick!
