Two Sites You’ll Leave Me For — Cuz I Don’t Write as Gooder.

Anyone who has read Inside Magic before knows that I am a vain person. I care ? seemingly ? about only me. I don?t really care if others don?t like other magicians, but if they don?t like me, I get sad. Really, I get petulant.

So when I saw Online Visions and Little Egypt, I figured you would stop liking me and start linking to another. It wouldn?t be like a break-up in high school. After all, in high school we?d still see each other walking down the hall to our classes or at parties. In this virtual world, I?d never see you again. You?d walk off with Little Egypt or Online Visions and I?d wonder why you never called any more.

The writing on these two sites is so good and the care about magic is so clear that I can?t imagine why you would stay with Inside Magic and with me. You?re foolish. These guys are the ones to stick with. They love magic and they write so gooder than me.

Online-Visions is the kind of place you could spend minutes or hours and the only difference would be the quantity of the information not the quality. I have checked out each link available and found all to be outstanding. The writing by the contributing magicians is more than fantastic, it is substantive. (I looked that one up in a thesaurus). (Hey, what?s another word for ?thesaurus??)

I really am a critical person. I promise, if there was a flaw in the writing on Online-Vision, I?d make it the center-piece of this article. I?d rip it up and down until it looked like a doorway for a small truck. But I could…

www.youdomagic.com — Be Careful!

?Hello, I?m Tim, and I have a problem.?

I waited for the obligatory response.

It came.

?Hi, Tim!? the crowd was responsive and full.

This was my first time before the Magic Anonymous. I?d heard about it, sure, we all have. We never thought we needed it though. We could stop at any time. Or so we thought. Sure, we could drive right by a magic shop ? if we wanted to. We could not buy something we?ll never use at a magic convention ? but there are things we need.

?I?m a magicholic,? I admitted. If it wasn?t for the microphone in front of my sweating face, I doubt the crowd would have heard it but they did. I knew this was the right thing to do.

There was silence. They knew that I had the same problem as them ? why else would I be there? Sure, there were the multi-addicted folks in the crowd: the magic/juggling/clowning/ventriloquist folks but they all shared my problem; our problem.

I started my tale of woe. There were nods from some of the members. They?d been where I was. They?d lived the hell that I?d lived: buying fanning cards even though they?d never done a fan act ever; purchasing the blueprints and plans for tricks they?d never build. And of course, the tell-tale sign of Magic Addiction: buying thousands of decks of cards (both trick and normal) to the point where they could no longer tell which decks were gimmicked and which were normal.

Learn Out of This World Instantly!

I have been performing a variation of Paul Curry?s Out of this World for about 20 years. It was taught to me (along with the classic Curry method as well as Curry?s own variation) by my mentor in magic, Barry Gibbs.

You
use a freely shuffled deck of cards and ask a spectator to separate the
deck into two piles, one of red cards and one of black.

Sounds simple.

But
here’s the rub, your spectator is not allowed to look at the faces but
must deal the cards face down as their intuition instructs them. Now it
sounds impossible. At the end of the demonstration, the cards are
turned face up and the spectator’s intuition proved correct. Every card
is correctly aligned.

When I learned the effect, I was told that it was a very, very closely held secret; that few magicians knew. So secret was the secret that a magician was shot in some back alley of New Orleans for refusing to disclose it to another magician. I don?t know if any of that is true but it makes for great patter.

Over the years, I have come to realize that the effect has a profound effect on audiences because it seems impossible. There is no logical explanation for what they witness.

But what they witness is a lot different than what I perform and so it was a pleasure to see a video of the effect. I had not seen the trick from this perspective since I first learned it.

It is an amazing effect to watch.

It seems like real magic to watch and I really like the ease of handling. The
Ace Assembly should appear like magic and with this method there do not
appear to be any tricky moves, everything is above board.

Milt Kort Passes

Milt Kort passed away on August 1st here in the Detroit area. He was 85. He contributed so much to magic in both approach and technique and yet he was not a professional magician. His vocation was as a pharmacist.

Mr.
Kort?s dedication to the art of magic was exemplified by the time and
energy he spent in developing new effects and sharing with magicians
visiting southeast
Michigan. He was an author of two book and the subject of a book by Stephen Minch and illustrated by his daughter, Sandra.

Mr. Kort?s philosophy of performing magic began with the premise: ?Have fun!? He will be missed and we send our prayers and condolences to his family.

There is a very interesting on-line interview with Mr. Kort at the Magic Bunny website. The give and take will give you a feel for his personality and approach to our wonderful art.
