Learn From The Masters This Weekend – The Close-Up Clinic In Philly.

Roberto Giobbi

I enjoy the writing of Misters Swiss, Giobbi and Ben and certainly respect their skills and the idea that I could spend a weekend getting essentially personal attention from these masters, is almost too good to be believed. (Was that a Charles Dickens? ?sentence as long as a paragraph? sentence or what?)

The concept of a clinic is not new and certainly the idea of having one or two special instructors lecturing a group at a convention has been done. But this event appears to be the great combination of all of these concepts.

There are two clinics available:The Card Clinic and the Close-Up Clinicmake for a difficult choice.Asyou’ll read at the website,”you will spend many hours of pure instructional time with Jamy Ian Swiss and Roberto Giobbi at Card Clinic,or Jamy Ian Swiss and David Ben at Close-up Clinic, plus social time during meals and unscheduled gatherings.” Either way, it would seem to be an incredible experience.

And the best thing is that they will work with magicians at our skill-level.

Imp Bottle Done to Music

Oh, wait, you wonder how I know your skill level. You think that maybe because I am still working out of my Mr. Magic?s Magic Set and you are a five time FISM winner (in each of the categories except ?Best Magician to Use a Store-Bought Magic Set,? which I have a shot at winning when I get the Imp Bottle routine down pat).

Blaine Could Choke On Bill For Stunt

Big Bucks Below

Who’d a thunk it? Think of the money David Blaine is saving by not eating for 44 days. For me that’s got to be worth thousands at McDonalds.

But Mr. Blaine
has brought so much attention ? good and bad ? to his site that the
police have had to work overtime to protect him from golf balls, naked
men and women, men with cable cutters and the occasional egg thrower.

Well, the folks at Scotland Yards will apparently charge him for the police presence his stunt has required.

Reuters quoted the police as saying, “We have now asked the organizers to pay as it is having a considerable effect on (the local police authority) Southwark,” London‘s police chief Sir John Stevens said.

“We are also considering the public order implications of this event..” The second part of Sir Stevens’ statement gives one pause. Will he be charged or cited for causing such a stir?

Philosopher Evel

The great philosopher Evel Knievel once said, “all publicity is good publicity. There comes a day when the crowds and the cops don’t know your name and dogs won’t even take the time to bite you. So enjoy it while you can.”

Indeed.

To Err is Irritating: Corrections by Inside Magic

Our Editor

Errors and Omissions. It
is the policy of Inside Magic, to correct misstatements or errors
within five calendar years of being made aware of the mistake.

In the June, 1985 edition of Implied Magic (later to become Incisor Magnet to become Island Magma and finally, Inside Magic) we reported that Penn and Teller would join with the Amazing Jonathan to open a religious magic school that taught gospel magic presentation and performance.

The article should have included the word ?not.? Inside Magic regrets the error.

In the September 13, 2002 Edition of Inside Magic, the trick of the week, The Clinging Card was presented with incorrect instructions.

The preparation of the trick should have said, ?use some of your mom’s glue stick? rather than ?mucous from someone who is sick.? Inside Magic regrets the error.

R. Paul Wilson Lecture: Amazing and Well-Taught!

First you should know that Mr. Wilson has an accent. I was trying to place it because I had heard he works out of Los Angeles. I figured he might be from the Valley or perhaps Santa Monica but I wasn?t sure. Then he told us he was from Glasgow. I thought he meant the Glasgow that?s north of Bakersfield off the Grape-Vine but he was talking Glasgow, Scotland. He spends time in both the land of beauty and the land of beautiful people. I did genuinely feel like a dope that I couldn?t place his accent but I had heard he was from L.A. so maybe that?s why.

Mr. Wilson began with a variation on Three Fly ? I think that was the name, he has an accent. It was a fantastic study in misdirection. To demonstrate the effect he used regular-sized coins. The moves are slow, not awkward and the final vanish was so smooth and natural that I was blown away.

To teach the effect, Mr. Wilson used jumbo coins for what…

Indian Magician Comments On Blaine

Mr. Muthukad is more than a magician. He has worked to stop unrest between neighboring villages and taught the principles of non-violence offered by Ghandi and through the use of magic shows:

“Gandhi Mantra is our latest project to disseminate the eternal ideals of the Mahatama through unique magic shows, all over the world. Seven of the prominent messages of Gandhiji including truth, peace, non-violence, self-purification, communal harmony, abstinence from alcohol and formation of self-reliant villages would be highlighted through meaningful magic shows.”

If funding works out, Mr. Muthukad intends to perform in those areas most affected by war and violence: Japan, Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq as well as “magical manifestations against war at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.”

Two of his planned effects will be making a statue of Ghandi speak to the crowd and to catch a bullet in his teeth fired in a military camp and completely under control of the Defense Ministry. They will verify the loading and inspect the bullet after it is (hopefully) spit from between the magician’s teeth.

On the subject of Blaine, however, his comments are more reserved:

“Blaine?s is a different attitude: to undergo endurance tests, evaluate physical abilities etc. To be honest, Blaine?s feats are more expressions of his good physique than magical acts. I have been enthusiastically watching Blaine. His magic never went beyond common sleights of hands, using cards; but he should be appreciated for popularising magic, bringing magic into streets, among public and shoppers of the roadsides but not for his sort of endurance tests like fasting above the Thames or walking over the London eye.”

Mr. Muthukad’s mission follows within the philosophy of Ghandi that it is in action we find satisfaction and there is no satisfaction in “inertness.” Thus his show has him”acting, doing something not only for magic but for the humanity as a whole.”

We wish him the best of luck and safety in his trip. His success in ending violence between towns is documented and his dedication to using magic to further the message of peace is commendable.
