Incredible Magic – Looks Real, Costs Pennies

Editor’s
Note: I am on the Atkins Diet. Thatmeans I can’t eat any carbs, sugars,
things that look like carbs or sugars or things that even remotely
taste good but it is working. I’ve already lost 2.23 lbs. That is the
approximate weight of half my mind. I’m going crazy. This review was
written during one my times of severe need.

There are tricks you read about, buy and store.

There are tricks you see at conventions, buy and forget you bought them and then buy them again and store them.

Then there are the very few tricks that you see, buy, practice and use.

This, my friends, is one of those few tricks. Russ Niedzwiecki?s Just Passin? Thru takes the cupcake and you know how I love cupcakes. I can eat a cupcake all day, put the icing back on and eat it for another day.

I
have it on good authority that Melissa Joan Hart of Sabrina the Teenage
Witch thinks this is the best pencil through bill trick available.

Why the Hatred for Roy — A Survey of the Recent Press on a Tragedy

Roy and White Tiger (File Photo)

The AP article in The Olympiannotes that: ?Comedians, radio shock jocks and fellow magicians loved to poke fun at the eccentric Germans in glittery, futuristic outfits who for decades pranced around with white tigers on a Las Vegas stage.?

The word ?pranced? isn?t quoted from some other source within the story but apparently was offered by the witty writer working the weekend beat at the AP.

I?ve seen the Siegfried and Roy a bunch of times and never saw either one of them ?prance.? You have to wonder if this type of writing would have been considered appropriate for some other typically maligned group. ?The Irish American Mayor slurred and stumbled through his speech? or ?Female National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice unleashed what seemed to be a PMS-infused argument against the Hamas? leader.?

As it turns out, the word ?pranced? comes from a Penn Jillette quote in another story, he accuses the duo of ?prancing like fairies.?

I digress. The point of the article is apparently that no one is making fun of Siegfried and Roy any longer for their allegedly gay lifestyle. And yet, within the first sentence, we are returned to the apparent small-minded attempt at humor by some anonymous…

Inside Magic View of FFFF by Robin Dawes

Robin Dawes – Inside Magic Guest Columnist

One of life?s lessons is that it doesn?t matter so much where you go ? what matters is who you are travelling with. Batavia New York is pleasant enough but with nothing much to recommend a visit … unless you happen to be travelling there during the last weekend of April, when you will be in the best company in the world: the collection of 150 or so oddball geniuses that Obie O?Brien summons each year to convene for the gathering affectionately known as FFFF or 4F, more formally titled Fechter?s Finger Flicking Frolic.

2003 marked the 33rd iteration of this gathering of close-up gods and goddesses (and a few mortals such as myself) for more than three days of virtually non-stop teaching, learning, laughing, and bonding.

The invitation says ?The Magic Starts Wednesday 8 PM? and by golly, it does! One of the features of FFFF is that Obie never announces his roster of lecturers in advance, so the Wednesday night lecture is always a surprise. This year the opening lecturer was none other than Patrick Page, FFFF stalwart and possessor of an astonishing breadth and depth of magical knowledge and wisdom. Pat demonstrated and taught (not just explained) eleven items, ranging from insightful advice on top-change misdirection to a brilliant alternative to the Devil?s Handkerchief … and that was all before the break. After the break, he taught nine more lessons, ranging from a routine with ESP cards to billiard ball manipulations. I use the word lessons intentionally. Each item, be it a trick, sleight, or utility prop was infused so thoroughly with his insight that it became a true lesson in magic. I don?t think I have ever seen a lecture with so many excellent effects from such a variety of fields (cards, coins, mentalism, beer,…
