The Magic News of the Day is Chocked Full-O-Good Stuff
It’s All Good
Usually we have one or two stories and try to fluff it out with news releases about the latest discovery in Velcro or that five-part series we did on how to waste a reader’s time. But today, we’ve got news, by golly. We go to Oman to see the Classic Magic of Japan; we hit Britain to learn about the costs associated with Mr. Blaine’s Box of No Food and Sir Paul McCartney’s legal troubles from just being beneath the box.
Perhaps the neatest story in the collection is Tom Cruise fixing to get ready to film “The War Magician” ? the story of Jasper Maskelyne and his use of Illusions to help win the war.
Don’t get angry with us if you see me putting in puff pieces later but at least today, your anger can be abated.
The Japan Foundation is Presenting a Traditional Magic Show in Oman Today
What do Orson Welles, Luna Shemada, Houdini and William McKinley have in common?Isn’t that just like one of those quizzes at the back of Magic magazine?I spend hours trying to link the commonalities between the people each month and each month I’m wrong.Remember when they had this list: Thurston, Keller, Pee-Wee Herman and Kim Jong-il, and Marshall Brodien?
I was thinking, “people who used playing cards on television” but then I remembered Kellar and Thurston weren’t on tv.
Then I thought, “people who have performed at the Grand Old Opry theater. But when I re-read my history, I found that Pee-Wee Herman performed at the new Grand Old Opry Theater.
Then the next issue of Magic came and I learned it was, “people who wore bow ties and loved Irish line dancing.”
Who knew?
Well, the answer to our “what do they have in common” question can be found in The Magic News of the Day.Check it out but try to guess first.
The one thing I enjoyed about Jay Sankey?s lecture, was the psychology lessons he provided with virtually every effect. He?d go beyond the admonition to ?cover small moves with big moves? or ?if you?re not being chased, don?t run.?
He explained how to practice effectively and how to anticipate where and why a spectator will be looking at each moment of your routine.
I am convinced he has done his homework on these issues and knows the right way to do what needs to be done to get the most out of your magic.
I thought he should write a book about the ?how? of presentation and the ?why? of movement. We?ll he?s written it.
His latest book is called Beyond Secrets and really does what we, as magicians, needed him to do.He applies his experience-based knowledge to our acts without regard to the type of magic or the actual effects we use.
In just over 180 pages, he teaches us how to practice effectively, make a fluid transition between our tricks, connect with the entire audience, and develop the creativity that we probably have but have never tapped.
Happy Valentine’s Day and welcome to the one place on the web where you learn not only about a man who likes to minister the gospel, carve wood and perform magic as well as a man known in his secret life as Mr. X – The Math Magician.
They’re both in the news today but that’s not all. It’s more than St. Valentine’s Day — it’s Teller’s Birthday!

Bob Bishop is Mr. X the Math Magician
Bob Bishop
Bob Bishop is more than a math teacher, he is Mr. X the Magician. He uses his magic to teach children in Boise, Idaho with the goal to ?make magic fun and help get rid of the math stigma.?
Mr. X?s philosophy is based in the reality that he has the children in his class for just a little while.?“A lot of what I’m trying to do is change attitudes toward math. In the short time I’m with the students, I’m not going to teach tons of concepts.”
What a great collection of neat stories in Today’s Magic News. We’ve got shows upstairs and downstairs, one man’s brave work to inspire others through magic and to cope with Tourette Syndrome, and another man’s decision to give up eating light bulbs.
