Sammy, Siegfried, Smokies and Show-Biz

Many people ask me how I find the stories I find for Inside Magic.  The truth is, I don’t really get asked that question by anyone but if I did, I could tell that person that I read as many magazines and on-line journals as I can find.  But even with my usually reliable list of publications, I apparently miss very important sources ? like the Congressional Record.  There was an important resolution voted out of the Resources Committee today and headed for a vote by the full house.  If you’d like to know what the heck I’m talking about

Siegfried and Roy Resolution Emerges From Committee.  The House Resources Committee was charged in November 2003 with the task of “Marking Up” a proposed resolution by the representative from Nevada, the Hon. Ms. Berkley and the Hon. Mr. Porter.  The title of the resolution (H.Res. 431) is “Honoring the achievements of Siegfried and Roy, recognizing the impact of their efforts on the conservation of endangered species both domestically and worldwide, and wishing Roy Horn a full and speedy recovery.”

You can read Ms. Berkley‘s wonderful presentation of H.Res. 431 on the floor of Congress by visiting the Inside Magic Library here.  You can read the full bill in the Library

All Roy, All Day

Today’s Magic News takes us to Las Vegas and Los Angeles primarily.  We have several stories about Roy Horn and his continued recovery as well as the upcoming “Father of the Pride” cartoon series.  It will be the first series on NBC’s primetime to use the computer to generate the images — in much the same way as Shrek and Jimmy Neutron.  The producers of the show include Siegfried and Roy as well as the studio that put out Shrek, Dreamworks SKG.

The Hollywood aspect gets a bit thick but Roy’s meeting with Montecore — the tiger responsible for his injuries — is heartwarming.

Roy Horn Visits Montecore.  Roy made his first visit to the white tiger responsible for his nearly fatal injuries.  On October 3rd, last year, Montecore mauled Roy onstage during a live show in Las Vegas.  Roy spent the last nine months fighting for life and Montecore has been kept at the magicians? Las Vegas refuge.  Roy was described as tearful.  The Contra Costa Times quoted an Internet source saying, ?the 59-year-old patted and chatted to the big cat as part of a TV documentary on his recovery, according to IMDb.com, which will be aired on the first anniversary of the tiger attack that left Horn clinically dead for a minute.?

The reunion took place at Siegfried & Roy’s Secret Garden at the Mirage hotel and casino in Las Vegas, where Montecore has been housed since the mauling. Meanwhile, Horn has amazed doctors, who feared he wouldn’t survive his injuries. He has regained the ability to speak and write.

Accountant/Magician Wilson ?Red? Hall?s Magic Collection Secures Press.  Mr. Hall is the principal of Wilson W. Hall and Associates in Bay City, Michigan, and a certified Magic Enthusiast.  He performs magic for clients and prospective clients and his office is adorned with 24 restraints; one of which belonged to Houdini.  Over the past 20 years, Mr. Hall has collected over 1,000 photographs in addition to props and memorabilia.

One of his fond memories involved the late-Harry Blacksone, Jr.  Mr. Hall met Blackstone at an International Brotherhood of Magicians convention in Las Vegas one year. Hall told Blackstone he was from Michigan, and the two struck up a conversation. Harry Blackstone Sr. is from Colon. ?We started talking, and he gave me his business card,? Hall said. ?I had collected an old brochure from his father, and I mailed it to him. He was really grateful.? The brochure ended up in the Blackstone Museum, and Hall received an autographed picture of Blackstone Sr., whom Hall…

I Feel Like David Blaine – Sort Of

The more I think about it, the more I think the waitress was right.  I should go home; the sun is coming up now, my fingers and brain are numb and I am badly in need of a shave and a Kleenex? facial tissue.

But something about Magic is just magic for me.  I love this stuff and, like the elixir I stopped drinking at 2:30, once it gets into your bloodstream, you grow dependent on it.  The waitress (she has no badge and I can?t remember what she said her name was/is) let me stay after closing time and sold me the rest of the bottle of Old Groggy Uncle I had been enjoying.

Now, the Old Groggy Uncle bottle is drained, my credit card was just declined and I?ve worn out my welcome here at the Mystic Hollow Lanes Liquor Lounge.

When my card was declined, she told me there was no reason to stick around.  She?d cover the charge ? it was for her tip, so I feel horrible ? and the credit card company had authorized my earlier charges.  I told her what I was doing on this computer and she seemed mildly interested as she set up for continental breakfast by emptying ashtrays and putting down paper placemats.

?Are you a magician, then?? she asked as she considered whether the salt shaker needed refilling.

I nodded.  I was afraid to talk.  I had no idea how I would sound.

Bob Cassidy’s Mental Miracles – Buy It Right Now!

It was back in the 1990?s when I first reviewed Bob Cassidy?s Mental Miracles DVD. It hadn?t come out yet and I didn?t know who he was but I knew there had to be a video method of teaching me ? a card guy ? how to do real mentalism. I bring up this historical note because I noticed today that Bob Cassidy?s Mental Miracles DVD is now being listed as a Top Item on Penguin Magic.

In many ways that makes me sad.

If you are interested in the psyche of Tim Quinlan, and I must warn you, a trip into my mind can be frightening . . . very frightening . . .

No joke, Inside Magic did begin in the early 1990?s, around 1991.

My wife and I would write out the columns, the news, the features, paste it all up at the Kinko?s in Winter Park, Florida and send them out. We had about 200 loyal readers ? almost all from our ads in Boy?s Life ? and we lost money on every issue. It was a wonderful experience though.

Back then, it was called, Mystic Hollow Magic Newsletter.

In one column, I suggested that there must be some way, short of hiring a top mentalist for a personal session, to learn how to…
