Father of the Pride Becoming Cult Fave?HeatherHavrilesky, the outstanding television critic for the online magazine, Salon, said she assumed she would dislike the new computer-generated animated show based on the Hollywood buzz. She thought the pilot would be a “laugh-free” episode.
Contrary to the opinion of the “cool guys,” she found the show entertaining and funny. “I found it alarmingly good and delightfully weird, particularly the scenes involving Siegfried and Roy running off to 7-Eleven for a Big Gulp. (No, I’m really not kidding.)”
Ms.Havrilesky wouldn’t be much of a television critic without offering some criticism. She relates her objections with her typical, charming self-deprecating manner:
“My only complaint is that the voices of Larry and his wife (played by JohnGoodman and CherylHines) are so familiar, it’s downright distracting. Plus, am I the only person on the planet who finds each of their voices annoying in its own way? Maybe it’s just because I feel like I’m watching ‘Roseanne’ or ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ every two seconds, or maybe it’s the fact that I didn’t like Goodman’s character on “Roseanne” and really dislike Hines’ character on ‘Curb.’ Or maybe I’m just a big jerk.”

There were just two things Tom Hardy couldn’t stand and both of them were staring him in the face: an empty bottle of viejo abuelo and the likelihood of a painful death. The empty bottle stood upright and behind it, leaning on the bar, was a woman he had just met and the gun he met even more recently.
“Where did you learn the trick?” the barmaid asked.
Her finger was still outside of the trigger guard of the .38 revolver. That was a hopeful sign.Other than the distraction presented by the nickel-plated and fully loaded weapon, Ayudante was not an unattractive woman. She looked to be in her late twenties and in good condition.
Hardy had thought it amazing that unlike most of the bar maids in this border town on the wrong side of the border, she still seemed to have some innocence and trust left.He hadn’t picked her to a pull a gun on a guy just because he performed a magic trick. That’s the kind of stuff he’d expect at Agujero Fácil or Puntito Mojado but not here in the Chili’s or T.G.I.F. of San Cansado.
“What’s with the gun?” the old magician asked as he gazed back towards the empty bottle. “And what’s it take to get another drink around here?”
His stare towards the bottle was interrupted by the muzzle of the snub-nosed .38 being shoved into his forehead. He looked up slowly and thought that even if Ayudante was a terrible shot, she probably would not miss his head…
In Today?s Magic News, we have nothing but good and positive material. You?ll learn about the USDA?s latest move in the Siegfried & Roy Tape Struggle, David Merry?s plans for October, the Return of Jack Barrows to Colon, and Trey Cromwell and Michael Taggert?s Upcoming Show in Fredericksburg.
Before we jump into the news, we have two items to mention: a contest and a correction.
The Contest
Two years ago, Inside Magic named Henry Evans the Inside Magic Magician of the Year.He was very kind and thanked us for the honor and we felt good about ourselves.Last year, we were to announce the Magician of the Year in the first week of October but the tragedy at the Mirage on October 3rd overshadowed any announcement we could have made.
Magician of the Year: Henry Evans
In the first week of October, this year, we will name the Inside Magic Magician of the Year for 2004 and we need your help. Please send your nominations to us at the email address below.
Here are the rules. The nominee: 1) must have actually performed, written, lectured or taught magic in 2004; 2) need not be a professional or semi-professional magician; 3) need not be well-known around the world; 4) need not be of any specific age or gender; and5) must have demonstrated his or her commitment to the Art of Magic through his or her work in 2004.
While Inside Magic does not usually cast stones or even pass them, we are taking a position on this ridiculous ?debate? between the Close-Up Magicians for Truth and the True Magicians of Close-Up.
No doubt you have seen their ads all over the Net.You can?t even do a search on MSN without one or the other group?s pop-up popping up with those stupid videos. We looked at both advertising campaigns and found both to be lacking in truth, substance and class. They are all a result of the recent changes in the OSHA regulations as they apply to the Parlor Magician.
I don?t need to remind you of the radical and expensive requirements of the new act: no fire (without a firefighter present), no razor blades or needles in mouth, no finger or hand chopper (without a Orthopedic surgeon present), no needle or knife through arm, and no mouth coils (without a dental surgeon and dental hygienist present).

Some have opined this is really nothing more than a full-employment act for physicians and firefighters.I don?t know about that.I do know that I can?t wait until these ads are history.

It is a great deal and we don’t make a dime off it. That’s how great it is.
