Bullet Catch for Kiddie Shows?

Former Mrs. Quinlan

Tony Spain has been the subject of derision throughout his career and this is no time to stop deriding.  He has been successful in getting along in the world of Magic despite his considerable lack of ability.  He is may be a dullard but at least he is un-original.

A while back, we did an interview with Mr. Spain.  It was a frank discussion and seemed to hit a chord with others with the lucky combination of a lack of talent plus a lack of inhibitions.

The following is in response to our open-call for magic articles, essays, and reviews.  Inside Magic does not support or agree with Mr. Spain?s comments.  In fact, find them reprehensible and poorly written but because Mr. Spain is married to my first wife, it seemed necessary to keep her happy and allow some income to finally cross the threshold of their little love nest.

I was pawing through my new copy of Magic Magazine when I noticed a peculiar advertisement.  Hocus Pocus was selling a Bullet-Catching trick for just under $900.00.  Few tricks get magicians? juices going more than the famed, famous and infamous Bullet-Catching Trick.  The trick is exciting to do and see.

When we professional, master magicians present the trick, we love to tell audiences that millions of performers have died attempting the feat they are about to witness.  I am sure the number of dead magicians is not in the millions range or even more than 500,000, but why let the facts get in the way of great story.  Besides, the death of a few magicians does not catch the audience?s attention compared to ?over a million magicians have died in the performance of this trick!?

David Copperfield is Hot!

How hot is he? Do you recall a few weeks ago when we heard from an European magician about to start his Chinese tour.  The young buck proclaimed that while Mr. Copperfield had been an inspiration and was ?good,? he now seemed tired and his illusions were stale.

The staff of Inside Magic or the city of Winnipeg does not share this opinion.  When his November 21st shows at the MTS Centre sold out almost immediately, he decided to add not one but two more shows the following night.  That?s not too shabby; considering that the ticket prices range from $56 to $99.00.

Good for you, Mr. Copperfield!

Where I Would Like to Be On Friday

Close Up Magic

Jamy Ian Swiss and Michael Close are not just smart and nice; they are great teachers of card magic.  On Friday, October 22nd, the guys are bringing their talents to the McBride Magic Center in beautiful Las Vegas, Nevada.

It begins with a public show ? no instruction, just great magic ? starring Mr. Swiss and Mr. Close as well as a surprise secret guest magician.  (I think I know who it is but I do not want to say, for fear I will ruin the surprise or approximate an idiot by guessing incorrectly).

I do have it on good authority Seating is limited and advance reservations are recommended! The performance begins promptly at 6:00 P.M. and for a good time get there around 5:30 to meet the folks and see the beautiful McBride center. Tickets are only $25.00. You can reserve your tix by sending an email to info@card-clinic.com.

Hey, but wait.  Isn?t there more?  Don?t tease me with a public show and leave me hanging.

In fact, there is more.

The public show is a part of Card Clinic, www.card-clinic.com, a three-day intensive seminar in sleight-of-hand magic.  If you have signed up for the Clinic, you?ll go from the public show to a special dinner for the clinicians only.

This clinic is going to be something you?ll talk about for years.  I wish I could attend but I?ll be going into rehab.

Write a 900 Page Book, Make a Cool Mil

So often at Inside Magic we?re asked how someone can make a million dollars by writing a 900 page book about two magicians in historic England.

We used to refer the writers to a website that identifies trained professionals in their area that can help with their delusional beliefs that anyone could write a 900 page book about magic or that it would then sell for $1,000,000.00.

(Okay, purists will no doubt recall that Asland Thomas, Jr. wrote the 1,052 page book Ways to Not Doeth the Pass.  I hope they will recall as well that no one bought the handwritten book, that it repeated itself often, that six of the ways were previously discussed in Discoverie of Witch Craft Passes published in the 1600?s, that film and motion pictures did not exist at the time of the publication, that the font size was 23 point, that it had lewd pictures of scantily clad female ?magicians? performing inappropriate passes, and was written in Classic Pig-Latin.)

In the modern era, this is the first book about magicians (of any number) that is over 900 pages and sold to a major film studio for more than a million simolians.

Christian Illusionists Use Sleight of Hand to Convey Gospel Message

The Man, Andre Kole Kickin’ It Krazy

Christian illusionists are using sleight of hand to share their faith, but the results are genuine. Christians tend to confuse “illusion” – which is commonly known as “magic” in today’s English – with the biblically forbidden occult arts of sorcery, magic and witchcraft described in Deuteronomy 18:10-14 and Exodus 7.

The art of illusion, however, has become a highly effective communication tool for sharing Christ with a postmodern world.

“I believe certainly we can use illusions [biblically], and they work very, very well, but they have to be performed according to God’s will and clearly as illusions,” illusionist Dave Horsager, who travels with his wife, Lisa, as the ministry team Special Delivery, told “Charisma” magazine in the November issue, out now.

Distinguished illusionist Andr? Kole said, “magic, sleight of hand, illusion – whatever term you want to use – is such a wonderful springboard to talk about Christ.”

He has been responsible for helping to develop such world-famous stunts as making the Washington Monument levitate and the Statue of Liberty disappear, feats made popular by Kole’s good friend and renowned illusionist David Copperfield.

After coming to Christ through an unsuccessful effort to discount Jesus’ miracles as “magic tricks,” Kole has dedicated himself to sharing the gospel through his abilities. While doing so he exposes the lie behind occultic “supernatural” activities such as astrology, necromancy and psychic fortunetelling.

Mr. Kole said, “[Magic] is probably the most universal form of…
