Alaskan Kid Magicians Perform Extravaganza

Robbie Christenson

Young magi part of the famous Alaska Magic Kids club will perform for the sixth straight year at holiday performances in Anchorage.   Don Russell began the club about ten years ago to help young people discover the fun and self-confidence that can come from the performance of magic.

The project began as a two week workshop for kids in 1998 and like all great acts, it was held over by popular demand.  The workshop morphed into Magic Kids for young boys and girls (7 to 17 years) interested in learning.

The club is supported by the parents and the public.  Parents assist in ticket sales, working the sound board and rigging lighting.  The public turns out for the shows throughout the year.

Alyson Wardell is a former Magic Kids member and says the program presents a refreshing philosophy.  “It’s not scary at all,” Alyson said. “All you’ve got to do is just do it, and if you mess up, you mess up. They don’t know you’re messing up.”

ALASKA MAGIC KIDS will perform its Holiday Magic Extravaganza show starring special guest magician, David Stanley of Dayton, Ohio, at 2 and 6 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at the Snow Goose Theatre, 717 W. Third Avenue. Admission is $3, $5 for adults and $10 for a family.

The Alaska Magic Kids website is really inspiring.  The site contains information about how the club is organized, the past events and the upcoming meetings and shows.  In the notes from the August meeting (there are meetings ? open to the general public; and sessions ? open only to members), there was instruction and practice on the proper use of a…

Father of the Pride Goeth Awayeth

Roy Horn

The insiders have proclaimed that the back to back episodes of Father of the Pride we?ll watch tonight are the death knell of the animated series.  The industry journal TV Barn writes, ?By burning off three never-before-seen half-hours tonight (including a rather tardy Thanksgiving episode), NBC is merely confirming the obvious: ?Father of the Pride? is done.?

The reasons for the premature ending for the clever but adult-oriented cartoon are manifold but perhaps the most obvious will suffice: after watching the recuperating Roy Horn on recent news reports takes the humor out of a show featuring a cherubic Roy and cute tigers.

Notes TV Barn, ?Viewers never warmed to the idea of risque talking lions and the pretense that Horn?s injury somehow never happened. You can?t always predict when a show will fail, but this is one case when NBC should have known better. Well, you know what they say: ?Pride goeth???

3D in Bollywood

Abra Kadabra

The reports from the Indian equivalent of Hollywood,  known as Bollywood, are releasing information about the newest magic movie soon to come to theaters ? at least in India.

The Movie Abra Ka Daabra is described by the press as a hybrid of the Harry Potter series and the styling of the India cinema.  The film features one of India?s top directors working in the 3D medium and making a show marketed for kids.

Aabra Ka Daabra tells the story of Shanu, who joins the school of magic, Aabra Ka Daabra, to become a magician. There’s a reason behind Shanu aspiring to be a magician: His father, Madan, was a magician who everyone presumed had died while performing a daredevil act.

There is virtually no money for the promotion of the feature and so the director and producer are hoping for big word of mouth.  If the pic is ever released in the US, we?ll let you know.

Essay in Philippines: Learning Secrets Didn?t Steal Magic

“Oh My Goodness!” says Lindsay

There is a pithy and poignant essay in one of the Philippines? fine papers this morning (yesterday for the folks in Manila) about the effect of exposure shows on the psyche.

The essayist proclaims his love for magic not as a performer but as an audience member.  He watched women cut in half or levitating and wondered.  ?What strange, alien world did these awesome magi of the impossible come from? What inexplicable powers they possessed! Like many other children in the audience, I wished I could be as preternaturally potent as they were.?

He tried to learn the craft but found he couldn?t even fool his puppy.

As he aged, he was treated to the performances of better magicians and even ?more dazzled.?  He was stunned when he volunteered for a magician:

One time, I volunteered to be the object of a name magician’s expert moves, and I was stunned when he correctly announced the numbers that made up my TIN code, in exactly the right sequence! Did he have an eye inside my pocket, or what?

In the gentleman?s heart, he knew it was all just a trick but he loved the magic.  This last Monday, the masked magician finally made it to the island nation loved by General McArthur.

We don?t know if the show featured the Masked Magician in person but his spirit of disclosure was evident even in the title, “Magicians’ Biggest Tricks Finally Revealed.”
