The Man: John Carney

How many lectures do you see in a given year?  If you are like us, you see a ton.  Most of them are great.  There is something about taking your stuff on the road that keeps the pretenders from the contenders.  We wouldn?t go out on the road to lecture about what we?ve invented or what we thought we could offer on a dare.

So, the bottom line: we go to every lecture offered.  We figure we?re bound to learn something.  Plus, we have to cover it for Inside Magic.

But here is the lecture we would not want to miss.  John Carney?s once-in-a-life-time lecture is coming to the U.S. this January 15th.

Why?  Why travel all the way to Hollywood, California to see a lecture?  Why?  You ask why?  Check out the book we just bought: John Carney?s On Palming.

If you have read it, we need say no more.  If you haven?t read it, there is nothing more we can say.  Well, we could tell you that his explanation of the Tenkai-esque palm has changed our life.  How about that?  If you need a reason to buy the DVD, blame it on Inside Magic.  We, in turn, blame it on The Man, John Carney.

?Hello, my name is Timmy and I fear the palm.  I mean, I do the palm but I have such trepidation.  I fear things.  Bad things.  When I?m like, you know, doing the…

It is Here!

The 2004 Inside Magic Magician’s of the Year Award has come back from the foundry.  They did a great job with the crystal – beautiful crystal taken from somewhere in Europe – and did a great job with the engraving.

We’re not sure what this has to do with Magic other than the recipients have been named the 2004 Magicians of the Year.

It would be noteworthy and newsworthy if there were some controversy over the selection; but alas, we couldn’t find anyone who objected to the choice of Siegfried & Roy.

The readers who wrote in support of the Duo disregarded the fact that their choice had not performed in 2004.  They all – and we mean all – felt Siegfried & Roy have done so much for Magic and for those of us who participate in the art.  We have never received so many emails (and one fax) on any subject as we did on this year’s selection.

Remember how we said we would not necessarily defer to the selection of the readers for Inside Magic’s Magician of the Year?  Well, that went by the wayside in light of the tremendous number of pro Siegfried & Roy votes.

We were going to select Kirsten Dunst for Magician of the Year if only for the chance to meet her when we handed her the trophy.  Unfortunately, the webmaster did not have her name on the list of nominees plus she did not do any magic at all in 2004 (or any other year).

Not withstanding the missed opportunity to meet Ms. Dunst, we are so happy that one of our most favorite acts won the award this year.  Our readers were right to vote for Siegfried & Roy.  As we write this, we’re watching…

The Great Runfola is “Great”!

In an article titled ?Act delights little kids as well as ‘kids with mortgages,?? The Commercial Appeal features The Great Runfola?s show at a standing-room-only New Year?s Eve show.

The Great Runfola taught the kids about Houdini, magic, and history.  Included in the show was his version of the Professor?s Nightmare based on a tale of a great-great-grandfather working in an Italian spaghetti factory.

?This gave the audience a chance to use the “oooohs and ahhs” they practiced earlier. They also showed off smiles, gasps and giggles.?

The Great Runfola is a native of Fredonia, N.Y. The Commercial Appeal?s residents have Patty Carreras to thank for Runfola’s visit. She is a relative of Runfola’s assistant, Miss Joni, also known as Joanne Carreras.

Before wrapping things up Runfola told the audience the best ways to learn more about magic were to check out books about magic at the library and to visit magic shops. He added that the key to magic was to “believe.”"
