Murray Hatfield Returns to Calgary for Three Shows

Murray and Teresa

Back when Inside Magic was just starting out ? we were on GAF View Master Disks only at that time and we had few subscribers ? Mr. Hatfield was one of the few big time magicians to support the site.

So we know that he has a special place in our hearts here at Inside Magic but apparently so too does his nation of Canada and his old home town of Calgary.

Mr. Hatfield brings his traveling illusion show to the Calgary Stampede today and tonight.  He has his heart set on being a “renown artist of illusion” since he was just a young teenager.  He pursued his dreams and took a different approach: ?I designed this show for people that hate magic. By that I mean, everyone has experienced a bad magician in their lifetime. At my show people don?t expect what they get.?

His quote seems applicable to his relationship with his lovely wife, Teresa.  ?She auditioned for a show as a dancer, moved up to dance captain and then head choreographer. Then we realized that we kind of liked each other and now we have been married for five years.?

Mr. Hatfield brings dance, music, artistry and style to the show; and during this tour, he is also bringing Dan Sperry and Golden Cups Winner Oscar Munoz, and the unique talents of  Paul Romhany, a Charlie Chaplin impersonator and magician.

Mr. Romhany has been touring the world for the past 15 years with eight to ten months a year on cruise ships.  You may not have heard of Mr. Romhany before — but that is because he’s been working.  He hasn’t attended many conventions but when he has, it has been with impact.  The only time he attended a convention was in 2003 at the PCAM when he captured
the Gold Medal for the Peoples Choice Award for my Chaplin Act.

The Calgary Sun describes Mr. Sperry’s approach as “reminiscent of David Blaine.” Perhaps it would be considered reminiscent if Mr. Blaine: 1) was still performing (anywhere); 2) ever performed a live show (anywhere); 3) invented new magic (ever); was an accomplished manipulator (other than of camera technique) ; 4) had any sort of affect to his voice; 5) didn’t perform tricks (with several different takes) for drunk college women in New Orleans; or 6) was a great guy.

Prime Minister is Prime Magician

Manmohan Singh

Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh is known to the world as the leader of the world’s largest democracy.  To his friends and nephews, however, he is known as a man who loves magic.

The Statesman of India reports Dr. Singh entertained his relatives and close friends for about one and a half hours last night.  The paper did not give many details of the performance but it apparently involved a silk.

One member of the audience praised the Prime Minister’s performance, ?It was amazing to see him with the children. I even saw him giving chocolates to them. He took no time to strike a chord with the children, who remained glued to him throughout the evening.?

Magician Saves Bunny

Amateur magician David Landry, of Sterling (VA), justifiably made the papers today with his death-defying efforts to save a rabbit from rush hour traffic.

Mr. Landry has been a magician for the last ten years and currently serves as a Major in the United States Air Force. On January 4th, Mr. Landry was negotiating rush hour traffic when suddenly he saw an animal dart into the road and narrowly miss the wheels of an on-coming SUV.

(By the way, it is strangely ironic; on that same day in 1941, Bug’s Bunny was starred in his first feature film Elmer‘s Pet Rabbit in which he said, how do you like this guy? He saves my life. And after all the things I’ve done to him in this picture.”)

Mr. Landry initially thought the animal, now huddled in a ball in the middle of the boulevard was a stray cat.  When he got closer, he found it was a “stunned and stranded jackrabbit.”

The accomplished magician and inventor of the Dave‘s 16-Digit Deception ? a very cool magic trick ? grabbed the bunny by the scruff of his neck and carried him safely to the side of the road.  Mr. Landry told reporters that he used his magic training to know how to grab the wild critter without being bitten.

?We magicians and rabbits need to stick together,? Landry said.

If you follow the link below, you’ll be taken to Mr. Landry‘s website where you can learn about his very interesting mentalism effect, Dave‘s 16-Digit Deception.

No less a critic than Danny Orleans praised the effect in Genii Magazine: “It should be called something like Credit Card Number Miracle. For the magic community, this is dynamite stuff.

For mentalists … it’s new and different.”

Here’s the effect in a…
