WAOW, Channel Nine, in Wausau will be interviewed and featured as part of the station’s Health News segment Saturday.

The station notes that the couple have been performing for about twenty years around the world as well as within hospitals and long-term rehabilitation centers.

The couple teach patients and their care-takers how to use magic to rehabilitate “a wide variety of disabilities, such as stroke and mental illness.” The station followed Mr. Spencer as he taught technique and presentation to area therapists at Marshfield Clinic and St. Joseph’s Hospital.

The Incredible Spencers will perform Saturday evening at The Lucille Tack Center for the Arts in Spencer, Wisconsin.

On Sunday, the indefatigable Spencers will appear in Osseo, Wisconsin at the Osseo High School Auditorium. After that, they head south to Iowa.

We’ve said it many times but it is still true, The Spencers’ website is hands-down the most up-to-date, professional, and informative website in Magic.

If you are like us, you will love living vicariously through the constantly up-dated weblog.

Bob Hale Passes – East Texas Legend

Bob Hale

Bob Hale was remembered by his daughter, Gwen Samples, as a “father who was always there” and an excellent magician.

Mr. Hale was one of the few African-American entertainers permitted to perform in East Texas during the 1950s and 1960s.  He worked  East Texas, the rest of the state, as well as Oklahoma, and Louisiana for forty to fifty years

He passed away in the Houston Hospice on Monday, February 28th at the age of 80.

He called himself “Hale-O, the Most Colorful Magician in the World.” “It was a pun on being a colored person – a black person,” said Ms. Samples.  ”You have to think, at that time that’s what he was considered.”

Last year, Mr. Hale was awarded membership in the Order of Merlin for recognition of 25 years of faithful service and continuing support of the International Brotherhood of Magicians. He was recognized last summer as one of the oldest members of a magicians association. He couldn’t attend because he was sick.

His daughter recalled her father telling of how highway patrolmen would take money from him on his way home from shows, particularly East Texas. “He never was angry about it,” she said. “It was just a way of life.”

Mr. Hale was a veteran of World War II, a member of several boards and president of the Texas Lions Club.  “He did a lot of close-up tricks that the audience couldn’t detect,” Ms. Samples said. “It took hours and hours of practice.”

He also liked illusion stunts like the guillotine and levitation. His daughters felt differently. “My sister and I really hated those because we were the guinea pigs,” she said, laughing.”

Our prayers are with the Mr. Hale’s extended family, his friends, and all who knew him.  He will be greatly missed by the magic society.

Slack Mansion – Houdini Slept Here

The famous Slack Mansion is up for sale and for a reasonable price, you can pick up this piece of history settled in the Pacific Heights area of San Francisco.

The San Francisco Examiner announced the mansion originally built for Judge Charles Slack and his wife, Charlotte, in 1891 is up for sale.

It was well known to the famous throughout the last century, including Barbra Streisand, Robin Williams and the late John F. Kennedy Jr.   Because it is built on bedrock, the famous earthquake of 1906 had no effect on the structure.

Mark Twain and Harry Houdini stayed in the home during their trips to California.  In fact, Houdini visited the San Francisco area four times and had a room in the stately mansion.

The home was most recently seen in the movie The Gangs of New York.  It is hard to believe it is going for a mere $57,000.

Oh, wait, that’s the amount of the taxes.  It’s really for sale at $4,400,000.  Our bad.  Sorry.

Read the full real estate listing in the Examiner here.

Read newspaper summaries of Houdini’s four appearances in San Francisco including his visit in 1923.  “This was his biggest.  At the age of 49 and in front of 30,000 watchers, he performed his famous ‘escape from the strait jacket while in mid-air’ at Third and Market streets.”
