The Catholic Magicians' Guild

The Catholic Magicians' Guild is an international organization of
professional and amateur magicians dedicated to Catholic Gospel Magic. The CMG
was started in 1995 for several reasons. First, many Catholic magicians felt
constrained, awkward or unwelcomed joining the FCM (Fellowship of Christian
Magicians.) Second, many Catholic magicians never really considered doing actual
Gospel Magic as cathetical instruction.

The Catholic Magicians' Guild is an organization of magicians who:

1. help parishes by augmenting cathetical instructions of children and adults
with stage and close-up magic;

2. spread the devotion of St Don Bosco and St Nicholas Owen, two patron
saints of magic.

3. offer their services to Catholic fraternal and philanthropic organization
for fundraising and community;

4. evangelize and instruct non-Catholics in our faith through the vehicle of
stage and close-up magic (ie, Gospel Magic.)

5. wish to instruct the general public of the tricks and traps of charlatans
who present themselves as having "magical" or "psychic"
powers

Recent Projects

1. The Catholic Magicians Guild has recently helped design a religious medal
struck in honor of Don Bosco as Patron of Magicians in partnership with the St
Francis de Sales Religious Art Store (http://www.stfrancisdesales.com)

2. The CGM prepared a hagiography of Don Bosco that was accepted by several
Catholic, magic and clowning journals.

3. The CGM developed a cyber-chapel dedicated to St Don Bosco
(KismetMagic.com)

Suggestions for Catholic Magicians

Catholic magicians around the world, principally in Europe (especially
southern Europe), the States, Australia and Latin America, seek out their own
ways at performing Gospel Magic and commemorating the feastdays of St Don Bosco
and St Nicholas Owen.

1. Consider offering your services to children's hospitals and homes for the
elderly. If during your hospital rounds, you have the opportunity to offer a
silent prayer and blessing to the infirmed do so as unobtrusively as you can.
Even laying on of hands to ask God to heal a child is acceptable.

2. Volunteer time at Catholic schools, cathetical work including Rite of
Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) and Confraternity of Christian Doctrine
(CCD)

3. As to catechetical programs for kids, you'd be surprised at how much you
do remember from when you were a kid. Catholic theology is admittedly
complex…but not generally so when it comes to teaching children.

4. Offer you services for retreat work with kids, prayer groups with adults
and school fairs. It offers the most flexible and relaxed settings for kids and
adults to learn about Catholicism.

5. For those who feel they are truly academically unprepared to teach
catechetical classes to kids or adults, instead, contact the usual teachers at
your parish and ask them for the topic they are about to teach. Instead of
teaching the entire course, you might be able to offer a single magic effect or
two to teach that particular theological point.
