Derrick Burts Begins Nationwide Tour

derrick-burtsMagician Derrick Burts is
profiled for his magic and great heart
.

Wednesday morning, Mr. Burts heads out on a nation-wide tour entertaining and
raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Mr. Burts hits all the right chords with us. The Leukemia & Lymphoma
Society is an outstanding organization and we know from personal experience how
supportive and essential the Society can be. Magic is, well, magic for us.

The young man — he is a mere lad of 19 years — became addicted to Magic at
the age of seven. A shop-owner rubbed his a nickel into thin air and produced it
from Mr. Burts' ear.

Chris Cochrane on the Mend

Chris CochraneWe are delighted to pass along the good word on the long but steady progress of Chris Cochrane.  You may recall Mr. Cochrane – organizer of the Houdini Days Festival in Appleton , Wisconsin – was seriously injured in an automobile accident on the last day of the last festival.

Mr. Cochrane truly loves magic and is one of the great people in our business.  We continue to keep him and his family in our prayers.

In an effort to keep in touch with the many friends that I have made through the Houdini Days Magic Festival, I thought I would send this "unsolicited" email. My recovery is going pretty well.  Progress is slowing and the pain level is still fairly intense…I eat Ibuprofen like Pez!  I'm still working very hard to improve to the point where I will not have to rely on my cane for mobility.

Since I'm a glutton for punishment, my family (Beth, my 6-year old twins – William & Alexis, and my mother-in-law, Sharon) are going to Disney World next week.  We will be flying out of Wisconsin on Sunday, April 30th and returning on Friday, May 5th.

Young Joe Harper Wins Trophies, Praise from Paul Daniels

Joe HarperJoe Harper may be just 14 years-old but he has already racked up more
accolades and awards than your average internet magic journalist. That isn't
saying much for the young man but that is a function of our limited comparison.
Paul Daniels has complimented Mr. Harper and that takes him out of our realm by
6 x 1023 degrees of ability.

His story appears in Driffield
Today

Mr. Harper and his father worked to assemble, rehearse, and polish a
competition act in time for the Northern Magic Circle's Easter Parade. The young
man developed the ten minute routine with five effects, timed script, and
enthusiasm.

Mr. Harper enjoys magic as well as the friends of his local magic
organization, The Hull Magicians Club. He joined in 2004 and has come a long way
since.

Chung Ling Soo Opera to Premiere

leewarren
From the alt.magic online news group we hear Lee Warren and composer
Raymond Yiu are busy preparing for the premiere of an opera
based on the life of magician Chung Ling Soo.

Writes Mr. Warren:

The opera's London
premiere is at the Almeida Theatre in Islington on the 1st, 2nd and 7th of
July. It would be great if magicians would come to see it. About 70 per cent of
seats are already sold, but you can check availability on the Almeida's website
- www.almedia.co.uk

(Please note: the link on the original alt.magic news group listing is incorrect).

If anyone from this group comes to see it, let me know – it
would be good to meet you.

From the Opera's detail listing at the Almedia Theatre:

I saw a real Chinese guy do this stuff better

I saw him make a goldfish appear
You should have been there!

There were costumes and dragons

And a tiny Pekinese juggler

He was a wonderful Chinese Conjuror!

The Original Chinese Conjuror tells the extravagant true story
of William Robinson, whose onstage death at the Wood Green Odeon in
1918 brought to an end a brilliant magic career and an extraordinary
subterfuge. For years he had conned British audiences into believing he
was a more exotic figure than proved the case.
